News that Borders will shutter its remaining 399 store locations is an interesting chapter in the history of the book. I believe this plot twist could be a good sign for that ancient institution - the library. Libraries are a great institution for which we have Ben Franklin to thank. The library is a bridge in our society between the haves and have-nots. There's hardly a book at Border's you can't get from your local library - for free!
Oddly the greater business value offered "shopping" at the library is not what dealt a blow to Border's. The slow adoption of the e-book seems to have put the nail in the retail chain's coffin.
I confess, I was an early adopter of the Kindle, and now read books on my iPad as well. But, that hasn't slowed down my use of the library. In fact, I frequent two regularly both to borrow books as occasionally buy them from their used "sales" shelf. And if I have a few hours free while traveling to another town, I make a beeline for the local library. For me, I don't have to choose between electronic and print. I prefer both!
So, why will the library last? It will depend on strong leadership of local libraries for them to continue meeting consumer needs. But if you haven't visited one lately - here's what you are missing. The library offers an experience to browse, explore, engage, ask questions and find answers - for free! What's not to love?
